August Date of the Month

Dustin's clinic schedule kept him late on Friday nights so we kept our August date of the month local- camping in our own apartment!

I made a pretty sweet tent in our family room but it was infested with bears!  We watched The Sandlot Friday night and pretty sure we watched some Saturday morning tv in the tent too because we loved it so much.

Camping dinner outside- hamburgers and hot dogs

 Our forest backyard

 Our indoor campfire
 My kind of smores!
Camping breakfast in the morning- peach cobbler, eggs, and toasted English muffins

Chop chop

Every few years I chop my hair off and I was well over due for that big cut this August. Nobody in Portland has known me with short hair so it was fun to get reactions.  My favorite reactions were from the men at work:
Man: Did you color your hair?
Me: Um, yes.....

Technically I DID color my hair, but seriously, I do that all the time.  12 inches is a big deal people!
Lots of people ask if I get sad or nervous to chop my hair off.  I never get sad or nervous, just excited.

Here are before and after pics of my locks of love chop chop!
Before

During

After!

Over 12 inches!

4 inches thick- so much hair!

love my new look!

The problem now is that I LOVE my short hair and kinda want to keep it this way.  I actually do my hair now.  And it takes much less time.  Should I keep it short or grow it out again to chop it off?

Mount Saint Helens

In July we took a day trip up to Mount Saint Helens with my aunt Sheri and cousin Connor. Basically it was a perfectly beautiful sunny day in the Pacific Northwest so here are a bunch of pictures of our great day!
Ranier Cherries stand at the side of the road? Yes please!
Mt Adams and Mt St. Helens

Puffs of smoke coming off. Connor was afraid she might erupt while we were there.  We assured him she would not.

Just another perfectly sunny day in the Pacific Northwest!

Resolution Check In

Can you believe that it's September already!?! While August felt FOREVER long, I can't believe that we are 2/3 of the way through this year.  It's crazy!

Remember those Resolutions we set at the beginning of the year? Time for a check up!
Let's see how we're doing...

Goal #1: Save Money.
I am happy to say that we are right on track with where we need to be to meet our goal at the end of the year! Also, if things go as planned, my student loan will be paid off next month, meaning it will be paid off in half the time.  I love paying things off in half the time! If only we could say that about Dustin's student loans as well...

Goal #2: Lose 50 lbs.
Ha. Hahaha.   Bahahaha.  In February losing 5 pounds a month was doable. Too bad I didn't really work on it until June.  It's been a slow journey, but we are getting there.  I joined Weight Watchers and I have to say, I love their program.  It's slow.  So very very slow. But I feel like this is a program that I could do for the rest of my life.  You can eat real food.  You can eat whatever you want.  And you can lose weight.  So far I am down 17 pounds.  As long as I can average 2ish pounds a week for the rest of the year, then I can make my goal, but I won't beat myself up if I don't get all the way to 50 pounds.  I'm happy with my progress and with any more to come.

Goal #3: Dustin pass all his classes.
Well, there was one class he had to retake, but just the final at the end of the next quarter.  And he passed it then, so sure, we can say we're good on this one. :)  This quarter has been rough and next quarter will be even worse.  Fingers crossed and minds a studyin' for the rest of the year!

Goal #4: Brianne read a book a quarter.
YES! I have done this goal. So glad I set it! This year I've read Bossypants, The Great Gatsby, and Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief. Currently working on Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters and next quarter will be The Help.  Any other good book recommendations?

Goal #5: Daily Scripture Reading.
Epic Fail.  Recommitting right now. So far, doing great this week.

Goal #6: Make new friends/hang out with current friends.  We're doing ok.  But I think there is room for improvement.

Goal #7: Brianne piece a quilt a quarter, finishing 2 for the year.  Have I posted any quilting pics lately? Maybe I should do a post on that.  First quarter- yellow/gray chevron, second quarter- baseball quilt, third quarter- pink/green 4 patch for Kendra's baby girl due Thanksgiving, should finish it up this week so I can contemplate quilting it myself or hiring it out, and a cuddle strip quilt (2 quilts this quarter!)

Goal #8: Dustin find a new hobby.  How about studying?  That should be his new hobby.  Oh wait, he DOES have a new hobby- feeding the fish.  He loves our fish, Rambo and Chuck Norris.  Fish are his hobby.  Check.

Goal #9: Go on a vacation.
YES! DC was such a great trip and I'm so glad we got to spend time with family! We've had mini vacations here and there too.  It's been a good year for us!

Closing up this quarter and one more to go! My how time flies!

July Date of the Month

If you've ever watched an episode of The Bachelor/ette, then you will understand this date card... and the concept of date cards in general:

Dustin,

Will you accept this Rose City?

Love,
Brianne

You see, on this hit Monday night show, the one seeking love asks those in competition for their love if they will accept their rose, therefore accepting their love and their continuation in the game.
Portland conveniently happens to be called Rose City so we were able to spend a great weekend exploring different districts.
Friday night (though this wasn't really officially apart of the date) we visited the Humane Society to look at and play with puppies.  This is a very Portland thing to do.  Oregonians sure do love their pets.  It was a lot of fun and I thought little Twinkie was adorable.
We grabbed some grub in the Alberta Art's District which to me seemed like the Hawthorne District, but even more dread-locky.  So many hippies playing their guitars on the sidewalk.  Oh Portland.

Saturday morning we started our day with breakfast in the Gateway District at the Gateway Breakfast House.   This cute little diner was pretty tasty.  Even Obama ate here when he came through campaigning.  As we were eating I was already planning our next meal there.  Dustin's chicken fried steak was super delicious.
Next stop was the Hollywood District for a quick game of bowling at Hollywood Bowl.  We've had a summer bowling pass there this summer and while Dustin improved his skillz, I think I got worse...

Downtown was our next destination for a few fishy Moonstruck Chocolate truffles and a massage at an underground Spa Sasse.
After relaxing our sore muscles, we hit up the food carts just up the street and ate our gyro and beignets at Pioneer Square where we found a Ben & Jerrry's truck giving away free ice cream! Score! Before leaving downtown we stopped into a soda shop and found some funky flavors.
We headed home and let Dustin do a little studying/napping before heading out for the evening - stopping in the Kerns neighborhood for some fresh tacos at Ole Ole!
Taking the bull by the horns at Ole Ole!
Our entertainment that evening was in the Pearl/Alphabet District enjoying a hilarious time at Comedy Sportz.
We ended the evening picking up a Portland classic- Voodoo Doughnuts.
Portland, you sure have a lot of crazies but we are having a great time here!

Pinning Ceremony

Dustin has now entered the clinic phase of Chiropractic School. Imagine a residency portion for doctors- this is the residency portion for chiropractors.  They work in the on campus clinic at first treating other students, getting real practice in.  Then they start working on non students.  Like me.  Or other family members.  And then they can go off site and treat even MORE patients.  Then they graduate and make money (if only it was that easy).

So to celebrate becoming chiropractic "residents" they have a pinning ceremony - officially putting on their white coat and receiving a school pin followed by light refreshments.
Not a lot of family/friend support came to the ceremony, so I was glad I could be there to be a part of this transition.  I expected those who were in attendance to clap/cheer/hoot&holler when their loved ones had their names read, much like a graduation ceremony.  Nope.  These people were stone cold silent.  It was sad. So when Dustin's name was called (note, C's aren't that far in so I was able to set a good example for those coming after) I gave a "whoo!" and people laughed.
I'm awesome.  See?

Congrats babe!  One more year til graduation! Whoo!

DC Disasters

Our DC trip was awesome. It really was.  But there were quite a few things that went wrong.  You could call it "the lost trip" as that seemed to be a theme for what went wrong most of the time.  Not all of the time, but most.
The chaos didn't just happen on the trip, it started a few days before.
I dye my hair every now and again (really not often) and wanted to give my hair a refresher before we left. There is a certain auburn dye that is a non-permanent, washes out in 28 washes kinda dye that is my go to. Unfortunately, our closest Target did not have it for some reason.  So I thought hey, no big deal, I"ll try this one instead.  That was a bad idea.  My hair turned ORANGE.  Oh wait, not all my hair, just the roots.  It looked horrible.  This hair coloring episode was 2 nights away from the great escape.
Orange roots
I knew I wanted to chop my hair off when we got back so I didn't want to pay a ton of money to professionally color my hair just to have it gone soon, but we checked out a few salons while we were at the mall the next morning and they all wanted to take 3 HOURS and cost over $100, just to color.  That was a huge HECK NO so we went to another Target and found my regular dye.  Re-dyed the hair that night and.... slightly less orange, now more red.  But not auburn red, bright red.  As in my hair could be the red in a "red, white and blue" Patriotic outfit.  Ok for Portland, not for vacation, but I had to live with it cuz now we were at the day of departure.
Red roots

Which is when the first lost item happened.
The lost temple recommend: Sunday night just hours before we left, we were on the phone with my mom, just chatting and going over last minute stuff.  She asked if we had our temple recommends for our planned temple trip, which we assumed we did.  Checked my wallet... no temple recommend.  Scoured my purse... no temple recommend.  It was lost! Sunday night at 9 PM and no temple recommend to be found anywhere! Luckily we have an awesome Bishopric and an awesome member of the Stake Presidency in our ward.  After a few phone calls we were able to set up interviews and I secured a new temple recommend with an hour to spare before departure.  Side note: After coming back from the trip, a week or so after, I found my temple recommend that was lost- it was hiding in my car insurance card in my wallet.  Sneaky recommend.
The lost baby shoe: First day alone with the kids and what do we do? Lose one of Audrey's shoes. Sorry Adrienne!

The lost binky: After lunch at the Capitol on Day 3, we were hurrying to get to our reservation at the Archives.  On the way there were some police sirens, a favorite sound of Elliott's, to which he yells "get outta the way!" We had given Elliott his binky so that he could take a nap, but in the siren commotion (at least that's when we think it happened), Elliott took his binky out and dropped it on the dirty ground.  Halfway to the Archives we realized the bink was missing.  Super Uncle Dustin ran back to the Capitol, found the binky, and ran back to us just in time.  10 minute rule, right?
Elliott reunited with his bink at the Archives
The lost SmarTrip cards: Good idea: Buying a SmarTrip Metro pass while visiting for a week in DC.  Bad idea, losing said SmarTrip card at a Nationals Baseball game.  First it was my mom who lost hers right when we got off the metro going to the game.  Then Dustin couldn't find his when we went to get back on the metro after the game.  So we bought him a new one and luckily I had registered our cards so we could easily transfer the funds to a new card.  I called SmarTrip after the Holocaust Museum and canceled the lost card, switched funds to my card, easy as pie.  Then I looked at the SmarTrip card in my wallet... and it was the number I had just canceled, transferring funds to the lost card. Ay-yi-yi!  Got super mad, called them back and asked to undo what we had just done and switch the funds to the card we had in our possession, etc.  They said it might not work cuz once a card is canceled, it's over, but luckily it worked.  Though we bought another SmarTrip card in case it didn't.  We rock.
I thought this was a funny sign at one of the metro stations.  The joys of riding the metro!
The lost husband: Walking to the Lincoln Memorial was a feat and I was pooped. My feet were done.  So Dustin and I waited for the fireworks there, right? Dustin left to get water/food and my parents and brothers had gone back to the Washington Monument for the firework show.  Lots of time passed and no Dustin. Cell phone reception at Lincoln was horrible nonexistent.  We had a hard time getting a hold of my parents and I couldn't get a hold of Dustin at all, no texts, no calls.  Pretty sure it I had a huge panic attack. I left our spot to go find him at the nearest concession stand and he wasn't there.  I found a place with reception and tried to call him.  No dice.  Just voice mail.  More panicking. I went back to our spot (which it was getting even MORE crowded now as firework time was getting close).  After being gone for almost 2 HOURS, Dustin returned with drinks.  I cried.  He said he had to go back to pick up the food and I said, "No way! I'm coming with you!"  I guess he had gone to the OTHER concession stand farther away (he didn't know about the closer one) and with a much longer line.  We picked up our food waiting at the grill and sat and ate and cried.  I wasn't going to let him leave me ever again!
Happy to be together before losing my man
The lost ipad: Finally, we lost our ipad on our flight home.  We had it from DC to Minnesota but on the next flight from Minnesota to PDX, it was gone.  We realized it was missing just after we boarded and went to turn it off.  Pretty heartbreaking.  In the end, it's just stuff, but it took me a while to get over it.  Curse you Delta for having the crappiest lost and found system imaginable! I'm pretty sure we left it in the seat pocket on our first flight.  Note to you all, never put ANYTHING in the airplane seat pockets.  Ever.  I guess losing an ipad is one way to stop a Candy Crush addiction.
