It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

3 posts in 3 days! Don't worry, this won't become the norm. I've just been working on my lesson in relief society for this Sunday and need a break, especially because next week I will be writing a talk for sacrament meeting. Holy cow, this ward is going to be so sick of me, but then we'll be leaving for 3 weeks, so I guess they'll get over it in that time.

Plus, I needed to blog because I'm excited for Christmas! Our house is decorated and ready for Santa to visit! Which is awesome cuz he will be to our house in 2 weeks exactly! That's one of the many perks of going home for the holidays- that we get to celebrate Christmas more than once.

So to share in my excitement, here is a little project I made that is now displaying on my piano. Hope you like it as much as I do! Thank you Buddy the Elf for helping it look a lot like Christmas!

Seaside

The weekend before Thanksgiving, Dustin and I went on a little weekend getaway to the coast at Seaside, OR. I surprised Dustin by buying a groupon for the Inn at Seaside while we were still in Utah and had money. Hahaha, like we had money then.

We drove through the mountains and through SNOW to get there. I didn't know it snowed that close to the coast! With all the trees lining the highway and the snow lightly falling on them, it seriously looked like we were driving through Narnia. It was magical.

As we checked into the hotel, it started raining like CRAZY. We wanted to scope out the town, but I didn't want to get soaked before dinner, so we drove around the little town of Seaside. It really is REALLY little. It was hard to see much of anything in the downpour. As we were exploring, we saw what looked like just a really flooded road. We stopped at the stop sign and paused.... it looked REALLY flooded. Then I realized that it was the huge RIVER that runs through the town. For some reason, this part didn't have a bridge, just a stop sign. Who's idea was that?!!?? I have no idea. But thankfully we didn't drive into the river. That would have made the trip horrible.

After exploring in the rainy dark, we parked our car back at the hotel and walked to dinner, since it was so close. The Groupon included dinner credit to a restaurant, which means we were able to order something yummy... and we did. Prime Rib! It was so good and maybe it's cuz we eat a lot of ramen noodles and quesadillas, but it was SO freaking good.

As we left the restaurant, the rain had stopped, so walking back to the hotel wasn't so bad. We changed into swimsuits and went swimming in the hotel pool that we had all to ourselves. It was a blast! We picked up some movies from the hotel's movie library and headed up to our rooms to enjoy our "welcome package" of sparkling cider and chocolate truffles while watching Cast Away.

The next morning we checked out and the sun was shining. It was a perfect day! We went shopping at the Carousel Mall and picked up some Christmas presents for Dustin's sisters. Then we walked down to the beach. The waves were crashing so hard and it was fun to watch.

We visited a few other shops and then headed back home (through Narnia). It was a short trip, but it was fun and a great getaway!

Isn't this breathtaking? I love the Oregon coast. Even if it's freezing cold.

Giving Thanks

Things are in full swing Christmas here at the Creers as we are excited to celebrate Christmas #1 in just about 2 weeks before flying home for the holidays. But I can't forget writing a post about Thanksgiving!

The Jack family (my mom, dad, Ginelle, Spencer, and Evan) got here Wednesday afternoon. We surprised Evan by picking up The Limited Edition of Zelda Skyward Sword for Wii and he was so excited. He had been looking for it at every place in Utah County, but as he didn't reserve it, everyone had sold out. So I did a little calling at the local Targets at was able to reserve it at the Cascade Station location. We made a little boy very happy by having it ready for him to play as soon as he got here, and that's exactly what the boys did while the girls were working away in the kitchen making pies and rolls. We had some yummy pumpkin pancakes for dinner and then spent the night swimming at the hotel pool and hot tub.

Thursday was turkey day! We enjoyed sleeping in and then relaxing all morning. We headed up to Battle Ground for Thanksgiving dinner and festivities with my Uncle Art, Aunt Sheri, and their 3 boys (the Gaileys). Sheri brined the turkey and it was AWESOME. So moist and tasty. In fact, if you go to allrecipes.com and search for "turkey brine," hers is the first recipe to come up. We stuffed ourselves silly and then relaxed/watched football/chatted. We watched the movie (from the BBC? You can find it on Netflix) The Nativity and it was so funny. It's a British movie about a church school putting on a Nativity play. Just watch it. We finished the night with pie, pie, and more pie! And then a food coma. :)

Friday we did NOT go black friday early morning shopping. Instead, we slept in to our hearts content. We headed up to Cascade Station and hit up some lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings, then got lost in Ikea. I love that store. I love playing house in all the different set ups. We also scoped out Sports Authority for Dustin to pick out some Christmas presents from my parents, and then explored HomeGoods, which was cool! Utah doesn't have that store and they had a lot of good stuff. Good thing I contained myself and didn't buy anything. Cuz we don't have any money. :( After our adventures at Cascade Station, we made our way north to Vancouver and stopped at Old Navy for some Holiday shopping. We met up with my aunt, uncle, and cousins for dinner at the House of Beijing. I was expecting a restaurant similar to PF Changs based on the awesome reviews my aunt gave it. It was a totally dive. Looked so ghetto. But the food was awesome. I'm still craving the crab puffs right now. We will definitely be going back! We then headed up to Battle Ground for game night. The adults played Frustration and I am so happy to say that I WON! And Dustin came in second! It was a good game with victory for the Creers! To top the night off, we all headed down to Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland for a midnight doughnut run. I have seriously been waiting for weeks for this. I kept wanting to go to Voodoo Doughnuts but kept telling myself that when my family came, we would go. And it was worth the wait. Now I know that Voodoo Doughnuts has a lot of hype and I do have to say that they are not always amazing. They have some doughnuts that are to die for such as the Voodoo doll (chocolate bar doughnut with raspberry filling), Mango Tango (Mango jelly filled doughnut with vanilla frosting and tang sprinkled on top. SOOO good), I've heard the apple fritters are fantastic but haven't tried one yet, and the bavarian cremes. BUT, all their other doughnuts are just kinda so so. There, I said it. But for those excellent selections, they are freaking awesome.

Saturday we didn't sleep in quite as long, but we started the morning with early morning bowling at Big Al's in Vancouver with the Gaileys. After bowling we went to 5 Guys for lunch and then to Sheridan's for frozen custard. (can you tell how much my family likes to eat?!? Kinda the highlight of every trip....) Dustin and I shared a Candy Cane pothole (vanilla custard mixed with crushed candy cane and chocolate shavings with a hot fudge pool in the middle) and it was SO good! My aunt had to leave for work so we headed back to Big Al's for some arcades, and then to Trader Joes. My mom picked up some snacks for their drive home and they all looked so good! Eggnog flavored chocolate covered almonds! Seriously genius. I'm going to have to go pick some up for myself. Saturday night we were SO full from all the previous eating that day that we just kinda chilled at my house, watched Elf to kick off the Christmas season, and ended with Thanksgiving leftovers and pie.

My family left Sunday morning for their long drive back and while it was sad to say goodbye, we are excited that we will be seeing them again soon in Utah! It was such a great Thanksgiving holiday and we are so grateful that my family was able to come out and visit us. Dustin and I are so blessed with everything that we have in our lives! Sometimes we get frustrated thinking about the things we don't have, but we do have so much and are thankful for it every day!

For the Love of Groupon

Groupon has to be one of the greatest creations. I know they don't always have the greatest deals, but they have been awesome lately, allowing for the perfect dates as we explore our new state!

A couple weeks ago we used a Groupon to go to the Portland zoo. It was fun because they had started to put up all the lights for Christmas time. It wasn't a big zoo, so we were able to see EVERYTHING. Here are a couple pictures of trip:

Last weekend we used a Groupon to go bowling with our friends the Stanfords. The groupon was $25 for up to 6 people bowling for 2 hours, including shoe rental, $10 to the snack bar, and $5 of arcade tokens. Split between the two couples, it was a cheap and way fun date night! With 2 whole hours of bowling, we almost fit in 4 games. Our last game we knew didn't have much time left, so we had to hurry. We did "lightening" bowling where one person would bowl right after the other, to hurry and get as many frames in as we could. We were bowling so fast that the computer couldn't keep up with us and our scores got all jumbled. Which was really too bad, because we were all bowling our best game ever! Everyone got strikes or spares almost every single frame. It was awesome.

This weekend (today!), we are going to the coast and staying in Seaside with a groupon deal I bought before we left Utah. We got a stellar deal for a one night stay at a hotel in Seaside, a welcome package with flowers, wine (oh boy!), and chocolate, and $25 to a restaurant for dinner. We leave this afternoon and are so excited for a little getaway. Dustin has never been to Seaside so it will be fun to go explore with him! Especially cuz he's had a bunch of tests this week and needs a break!

Just a little note

Do you ever feel like you have SO much to blog about that you just don't blog at all? Cuz it's hard to spit it all out in typing and you don't know where to start?

That's how I've been feeling. Or else you would have had a post a day. My apologies for not posting much at all. I'll try to spit it all out. We've just been having fun instead.... and I go on these blogging feasts it seems where I'll just get 5 posts in one day. Maybe if more people would comment to let me know someone actually reads this stuff....

Plus, I've also been trying to get everything ready for next week because it's Thanksgiving!! And my family will be here! And I am very excited about that :) So the house needs to be perfect.

So, for now, I leave you with a short post including a few pictures of happiness.

Fall Fiesta

You know how Halloween was like AGES ago (at least it feels that way). Well, I'm finally blogging about it. Seeing as how all the young couples in our ward have 3-5 children, that meant that they would all be trick or treating or handing out candy to trick or treaters. So we kept it chill and just had a yummy broccoli and cheese soup dinner with some candy corn shaped cheesecake. To clarify, no, it was not candy corn flavored, it just looked like a cute candy corn!

We then watched Season of the Witch, featuring Nicolas Cage, and it was okay. Scary enough for us without giving nightmares.

A week ago we got to be a part of an Albertsons store closing featuring most every item at 75% off!! It was a MAD HOUSE. My incredible husband stood in line for 5 HOURS to get our food. I would have been with him there the whole time, but after being in line for and hour and a half, a friend picked me up to go to our Relief Society activity. And while I was there, I remembered that the store was closing at 7 and that I wouldn't be able to get back in line with him :( So he had to be in line by himself for 3 & 1/2 hours. Of course, by that time, everyone in line made great friends with each other since they knew they were going to be there for a while. We felt like extreme couponers as the total went from $240 to $59! 75% off is awesome! But I don't think we'd ever want to do that again.

We are excited for Thanksgiving in two weeks and for my family to come up and visit us! I keep wanting to go to Voodoo Doughnuts but am holding out til they get here.

Fall up here is so pretty and the colors have been changing a lot lately! I can't believe Utah has had 3 snow storms already. It's been sunny skies in the 50's.

Anybody wanna come visit? We have a spare room just waiting for company!

My Good Life

You know how most times, people just post about how completely wonderful their life is and how nothing is wrong, like ever? And you know that it's never all that they say that it is?

Well, my life is really all that. All that and a fresh baked cookie!

Okay, maybe not that awesome.

But, i am super happy.

I'm enjoying my time at home.

I'm enjoying helping out another family with their 5 kids.

I'm enjoying living within a budget.

I'm enjoying cooking most every night and trying new recipes (especially when they turn out awesome!)

I enjoy cleaning my house.

I enjoy reading my scriptures for a good half hour every day. Followed by a Conference Talk.

I enjoy exercising in the gym or with Bob Harper on the Wii's Biggest Loser game.

I am really happy.

Okay, okay, so not everything is fairy tale perfect. I would love to be able to buy things just for the fun of it.... To see something in a store and pick it up for Dustin just because. But now I have to constantly think, "is that in the budget?" Usually it's not. We used to be able to buy whatever we wanted. But I don't really miss it. I like not splurging on every little thing. I feel like I have a lot more self discipline. And staying in our budget will keep us self reliant. Which i love.

I also would still like a baby. I haven't started back on any clomid or have gone to see a doctor out here. We have zero insurance, but we do have money in our HSA still.... Not to sound selfish, but I am enjoying this time to myself and with Dustin. Just the two of us. Maybe it was that we were in my parent's house for a year, maybe it's that we're in a new area and I'm still adjusting to the changes... But I'm okay that we're not having a baby right now. We're not giving up on it, we're just not aggressively working on it with medication. The de-stressing, exercising, enjoying life can only help my body.

So yeah, not everything is perfect. But I am SO Happy. Have I said that enough yet? I have a good life. So good that I can blog this while watching The Price is Right. PS They tried to give away a freaking nice BMW today on The Golden Road. The chick lost. Too bad.

Yeah, I have a pretty good life.

Mt Hood Fruit Loop

This weekend we got to explore a little more of Oregon by driving/shopping on the Oregon Fruit Loop in Mt Hood with my cousins and aunt. It was such a pretty drive with the leaves all changing colors. We saw a lot of yellows, reds, and oranges!

We started at a little farm called Rasmussens. The prices for their apples were amazing, but when we had them weighed, it seems like they pretty much jipped us, saying that we were buying 4 lbs of apples when it should have only been 2. Hmm.... oh well. We at least got to check out a pumpkin patch, mini corn maze with a story of "The Princess and the Pear," and a whole "pumpkin land" area with painted pumpkins and gourds to look like fairy tales.

Our next stop was at Packer's Bakery. Here we found some great apple cider and HUGE cookies. Definitely a good stop. :)

We hit up Draper Girls' farms for some cinnamon and sugar dried apples, then ended our fruit loop stops with Kiyokawa's (something like that) which was the best of all the places!! Great apples with friendly staff to cut the apples for you to try a piece. They had an apple tasting section for a minimal fee where you could try just about every apple that exists. They also sold Asian pears! We got one to try, as well as a couple other local produce items.

It was a fun Saturday and we were so happy to be able to go out and explore the Oregon fall!

We played Boggle for family night activity. For those of you who know Dustin well, you know that he always wins Boogle. Like, always.

But not tonight.

Though we only played three rounds, I will relish in this victory. 30-28. Highest point word I got this evening: greatest. Yes I am.

I'll be home for Christmas

You can count on me. Please have snow and mistletoe, and presents by the tree!!!!

And no, it's not only in my dreams. Although the original plan was to not go home until March when my lil brother Dallin gets home from his mission, we decided to go home for Christmas!

The reasoning:

Dallin will be getting home the end of March, when Dustin's 2 week quarter break will be happening. Kinda. That's what we originally thought. Now that we have schedules planned for release dates and quarter schedules, Dallin will actually be coming home during Dustin's finals week, and then possibly not even giving his homecoming talk until April when we'll need to be back in Portland.

Nathan, Adrienne, and Elliott's spring break will come before Dallin's return as well, so they changed plans to come home for Christmas instead of March. Thanks guys, you're what got us thinking about changing our plans. We just miss that little Elliott of yours too much. And you too. Both of you :)

Dustin will actually have a THREE week break after this first quarter for Christmas and New Years instead of the usual 2 weeks. An extra week to party!

I currently don't have a job, so it's not an issue to take off holiday vacation time right now. Will I possibly get a job before moving? Maybe. But remember how I decided to stop living my life on maybes and just enjoy come what may? :) I remember.

We will get to be in Utah for Christmas, New Years, my momma's birthday, Evan's 12th birthday (how did he get so old?!), and East Canyon with the Creers!!! Basically, an all around win win win situation with lots of partying.

During Christmas break, I can see if Pandy at Wymount will hire me on for Christmas break help. That alone would pay for the plane tickets! And since my lil sister Ginelle works there, I'd still get to play with her while working. And since we'll be there for 3 weeks, I'll still have lots of evenings and weekends for family and friends!!

Doesn't coming home for Christmas just make sense? We're excited!

Some more of my favorite things

Shout out to Kara Jarvis, cuz I know you watch this show (let's see if you read my blog hahahaha), but I LOVE the show The Sing Off.

This is our first season watching it and I can't believe we didn't watch it before. Not only are the judges some of my favorite artists, Ben Folds and Sara Bareilles (love, love, LOVE), but BYU's very own Vocal Point, with ROBERT SEELY (far left in the picture above) whom I graduated high school with and sang in high school choir with, is on the show!! And they're doing so well!!! I love how the judges or Nick Lachey will introduce them as "the clean-cut BYU boys." It's so great seeing them on there and I hope they win it!

I also have a {relatively} new addiction to Pinterest.

I liked it a whole lot before, but now I am 100% addicted. I feel like I can't miss what anyone posts cuz what if it's AMAZING and I want to pin it too?!!? Okay, so I'm not really that dramatic about it, but I do love it a whole lot. I love trying new recipes I find on it, planning my dream home, finding cute new crafts to make, and being introduced to awesome new blogs out there!

And, just cuz odd numbers are the best and it would be weird to end this post with only two of my favorite things, another one of my favorite things is.... sweater weather.

Portland is now approaching sweater weather and I basically am in love with it. It's not too cold to scare you from going outside and enjoying the day, but it's enough that you can curl up at night and snuggle. We've been taking nightly walks and even played frisbee on our grassy courtyard yesterday afternoon and it was perfect weather! Portland, you still feel like vacation, but I could definitely get used to this. :)

Happy Birthday Dustin!

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Dustin's birthday is still two months away, but we celebrated it this weekend by going to the BYU vs. Oregon State game in Corvalis. I bought him the tickets for a birthday present when we were back in Utah and had money. It was such a great game! There were some intense moments where it was close, but in the end, we prevailed and BYU played so well!! I have to say that I'm very happy that Riley Nelson is the quarterback now. I think he is a much better player than Jake Heaps and it's nice to see the Cougs win! It was fun to be in the BYU section, even though we had a rather annoying older Oregon State fan gentleman right behind us.

Corvalis is a little college town and we had to park clear out in the boonies. This is a view of the stadium from where we parked. Can you even see it? Here's a little closer up view... still hard to see, but the area was beautiful!

Gettin my crafty on

I have so many things I want/need to blog about, but I'll start with my Halloween crafts since it's right around the corner! With my time just chillin' (and enjoying every minute of it), it's been awesome spending time working on some projects. My first project, the BOO woodblocks I picked up my supplies for in Utah, knowing I'd have some time before a job to work on it.

I also made a Halloween themed subway word art picture. It was way fun picking out the fonts and everything, I think I'll make one for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and every holiday!

Sorry that my pictures are truly horrible. The lighting in our family room is awful (there basically is none), and these pics come from my iphone.... someday maybe we'll have a nice camera.

10 Ways Portland is Different...

Moving away from Happy Valley Utah (not to be confused with the actual city that is literally called Happy Valley, OR just 17 minutes away from us) meant a lot of new changes in the lifestyle, culture, climate, um, let's just skip to the end and say basically EVERYTHING.

Here are 10 Ways Portland is Different from Utah County (in no particular order):

1. "Gentleman's Clubs". That's right, you don't need to go to Vegas to see Mr. Peep's Showgirls! You just need to take a left on 122nd from Stark St. and it's less than a minute away. But don't worry, Mr. Peep's isn't the only Gentleman's Club in town. In fact, "Soobie's" is a great landmark for us. It lets us know as we are coming down 122nd that the next turn is ours. Gentleman's clubs are as frequent as ABC stores are in Hawaii. Let's not forget about the Adult Video store either-- they are currently advertising their own special "stimulus package".
2. "Coffee Shacks". You know how in the summer there is a snow cone shack at every corner in Utah county? Same concept, but replace it with Coffee = Portland.
3. Freeway on ramps/exits. In Utah County, you have an on ramp and an off ramp for every single exit. Here, if you miss one, you are going to be taking the scenic route. If there is an on ramp on one street, there is probably not an off ramp for the same road, so plan your directions accordingly.
4. WEATHER. Sorry all you people in Utah who had snow this week. We had a light drizzle and temps in the 60's. When they say it constantly rains in Portland, they really mean that it is usually going to be overcast with a light drizzle. None of that Utah County down pour.
5. Homeless population. Utah County's homeless population really isn't terribly high. Or at least, you don't see as many homeless people. They have a huge homeless population out here. And I guess also a huge homeless KIDS population, which is really sad. We were looking up stuff on Oregon's DMV website and they have a section for addresses if you're homeless. Straight from the site: "Homeless: If you are homeless, you may use a descriptive address such as 'under the west end of the Burnside Bridge.'"
6. Gas. In Utah County, you just pay at the pump or in the store, pump your own gas, and be on your merry way. In Portland, most gas stations post a CASH price, which is usually 10 cents cheaper than a credit card price, and this is not just for ARCO, it's every gas station. Oh, and you aren't allowed to pump your own gas.
   
7. Sales Tax. As in, there is none in Portland. And at the Walmart in Vancouver, just across the border. Which is FANTASTIC because the Walmart in Portland SUCKS. Seriously the most ghetto Walmart I've ever seen in my life. And for crying out loud, it's just WALMART.
   
8. Fashion. Utah may be behind the times as far as fashion goes, but Portland is stuck in the 90's. I feel so well dressed out here. And I shop at Old Navy and JCPenny. Nothing to show off really.
   
9. Church Activity. In good old Salem, basically the entire ward is made up of a couple blocks, which 90% are active in the church. Our ward boundaries are much bigger out here, but our ward seems pretty small. It's bigger than we think, the activity rate is just 10%. That's right, 90% of our ward is inactive. When we introduced ourselves to our bishop our first week here and told him we were from Utah, he said, "Oh good! That means you're active!" Which we laughed at because we know that just because you're from Utah, it doesn't make you active, but now we understand why he would have thought that.
10. Organic. Utah county has a couple folks who are hard core organics. Most people in Portland want to know the exact farm their chicken came from, what they fed them, making sure it really is organic. We haven't been to this place yet, but we hear that at Burgerville, they post pics of the cows and their profile on the walls. Because people need to know how this cow was taken care of. They are that extreme.
    

Even with all these differences in Portland, we love it. :)

Home Sweet Home

I have some pictures finally of our new place. Well, at least the family room, kitchen, and big bathroom. I love this apartment. It's close to the main street, but not on the main street and there's a residential area behind us, so it's actually really quiet and our deck faces trees which are pretty to look at. I LOVE how much room I have in this apartment! There is tons of storage, including outside storage on our deck. I also have tons of counter space in my kitchen which basically is heaven for me. I love that we have two bathrooms! It is so fantastic!!

Things have been a little different as we are setting up the house and with Dustin starting school. Our roles in our relationship have totally shifted. Back in Utah, Dustin was the one who did most of the laundry, got our lunches ready, made the bed, and even cleaned the bathroom most of the time. (I know, I married a stud). Now that he is in school taking 30+ credits each quarter, and I am unemployed, I am the one doing the cooking, cleaning, and laundry, and it's nice, but I kinda feel out of place. I know I just posted the other day about how I don't want to work, but it feels weird not working... just being home all day. At least our house will always been clean while I'm not working! Thanks to everyone for the suggestions about employment--I think that's exactly what I'll do! Keep enjoying unemployment and projects and blogging, while still looking for a job I'll enjoy. I just found out from another friend's blog today and THE SWEET TOOTH FAIRY is going to be opening up locations in Oregon and Washington! I don't know the areas, but I wouldn't see why they wouldn't open up a Portland or Vancouver shop, so maybe I could work there! I'll just keeping putting my application out there and send good vibes to STF to get a shop up here asap! :)

The big bathroom, also has washer/dryer in it. Thanks to Lauren and Keilani for these bathroom accessories from my wedding! I love that I have two bathrooms now so I can use them!

I saw this idea on Pinterest and I had the jar with the candle votive and knew I had to do this! I just added a bow to it to make it cuter and match our bathroom colors!

Now it's home sweet home!
